Episode #2
Where Did You Sit In the Car?

We all grow up in a car, a metaphorical car, if not a real car. And if our development happens as it’s supposed to, the goal of our original car is to launch us. And when we launch, our task is going to be to create a new car for ourselves.

Tolly: In the first episode, we talked about what the metaphor of the car is, what it means, and why it’s so good at helping people open up about what their family system has been like. In the second episode, we’re going to discuss the different cars in our lives.
Ellen, what exactly do you mean by the different cars in our lives?

Ellen: Well, we all grow up in a car, a metaphorical car, if not a real car and if our development happens as it’s supposed to, the goal of our original car is to launch us. And when we launch our task is going to be to create a new car for ourselves.
And most people do this. They leave their car of origin, and then they decide to create a car for themselves. What I have found is that people generally do one of two things at that point:

  • They either create a car just like the one they came from because what they learned there and the rules of that car are so deeply ingrained in them that they think that’s just how cars should be.
  • Or they have made some type of what I like to call “intention” along the route in their car. They decide, “When I create a car, it’s not going to be like that. And so they may create a car intentionally as an adult that would offer different things to the people in the car than they experienced in their own car growing up.
