Why is a family like a car?
Imagine you’re a child sitting in your family’s car. Which seat are you in? The passenger seat? Who’s in the driver’s seat?
Every car has unique rules about communication and behavior which create distinct roles for each family member—these roles and rules shape our personality. People might identify as “the smart one” or “the athlete” or “the hard-working one.” Others identify as “the dumb one” or “the baby.” All roles have both positive and negative implications, and they create our identities and we act them out throughout our lives, long after we have left our original cars.
In my new book, What Drives You?, I’ll show you how understanding our roles in our own families can help us realize our best selves, empower our families, create high performing teams, and improve our communities.
